Week 5 Reflection

Our in-person field trip to PSII (Pacific School of Innovation and Inquiry) was a highlight of the course for me. I really enjoyed seeing a learning environment that looks and feels so different from traditional schools, especially one that clearly prioritizes student choice and curiosity.

One space that stood out was the stim room, which felt calm, intentional, and genuinely supportive for students who need regulation or a sensory break. The overall atmosphere at PSII encourages students to explore what they are passionate about rather than forcing everyone into the same learning path, which made the school feel welcoming and student-centred.

Pros

  • Strong focus on student passions and inquiry-based learning
  • Stim room supports regulation and inclusion
  • Affordable tuition helps make the school more accessible

Cons

  • Limited physical space means the school cannot accept many students
  • Noise from downtown traffic and loud buses outside was distracting at times

Overall, PSII left a strong impression on me. Despite the challenges of space and location, the school’s commitment to accessibility and meaningful learning creates an environment where students can truly engage with what matters to them.

Questions to think about
How might inquiry-based schools like PSII balance limited space with growing interest from families? In what ways can sensory spaces, such as stim rooms, support student learning and well-being in other school settings?
